Mike Clancy Appointed to Thinklabour board

As rank and file members of the trade union Prospect, we express our deep concern at the appointment of our union's General Secretary Mike Clancy to the board of the organisation ThinkLabour, formerly known as Labour Together.

Prospect is a politically independent union, and is not affiliated to any political party. We therefore believe that it is not appropriate for its General Secretary to sit on the board of an organisation which has the stated aim of helping the Labour Party win the next general election.

From 2017 to 2020, Labour Together committed 20 offences under electoral law relating to the declaration of financial donations, and in 2023 it hired a PR firm which falsely smeared journalists who were investigating these offences. We do not believe that this organisation's track record is consistent with a commitment to transparency and a free press, values which all trade unionists should hold.

We call on Mike Clancy to step down from this board appointment, and to focus on delivering for Prospect members instead of spending time factionalising within the Labour Party.
